What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take a clear position on a topic and give reasons that make sense. They use details from more than one source, explain how those details support the position, and organize ideas with transitions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states one focused claim and supports it with logical reasons. The writing uses relevant facts from at least two sources, explains each fact, and connects ideas with clear transitions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts without explaining how they support the claim. They may rely on one source, confuse strong evidence with personal preference, or use transitions that do not fit the relationship between ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students two short source cards about whether school gardens are worth the cost. Ask them to write a claim, two reasons, evidence from both cards, and explanations linking the evidence to the claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim, reason, evidence, and explanation cards to sort into a logical paragraph, then add transition cards between ideas.

  2. Ask students, “Should recess be longer?” and have them write a claim, then explain which source fact offers the strongest support.

  3. Play Evidence Match by having teams pair source facts with claims and earn a point only when they explain each connection.

  4. Write a letter to the principal proposing one school improvement, using evidence from a student survey and a school information sheet.
