What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather facts from several sources and combine them into a focused explanation. They organize related ideas, add details that explain the facts, and connect sections with varied transitions.

What Mastery Looks Like

The writing has a clear focus, logical sections, and facts drawn from more than one source. The student explains each fact, uses varied transitions, and paraphrases source information accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy source sentences instead of paraphrasing and combining ideas. They may list facts without grouping them, explain too little, or repeat transitions such as “also.”

How to Assess It

Give students two short passages about the same animal. Ask them to write one organized paragraph using both sources, two explained facts, and three different transitions.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs two short articles and sticky notes to sort facts into labeled sections before drafting.

  2. Ask students to explain which source facts belong together and how each fact helps a reader understand the topic.

  3. Play Transition Swap by replacing repeated words such as “also” with accurate choices from a class transition card deck.

  4. Have students use a park website and weather report to write a visitor guide with facts from both sources.
