What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine facts and ideas from two or more sources to explain or analyze a topic. They organize related points, add evidence and explanation, and use varied transitions to connect ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

A strong response groups information by idea rather than by source. It uses relevant details from multiple sources and explains how those details support each point. Transitions clearly show comparison, contrast, cause, or examples.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize each source separately instead of combining information by idea. They may copy details without explaining them or add facts that do not support the focus. Some repeat transitions such as "also" without showing the relationship between ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and chart about later school start times. Ask them to explain one benefit and one drawback using both sources and three different transitions.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fact cards from two articles, then have them sort the cards under idea headings and turn the groups into an outline.

  2. After reading two accounts of the same event, ask students to write which details agree, differ, or add new information.

  3. Run a transition card match where teams pair words such as "however," "similarly," and "therefore" with their purposes and sample sentences.

  4. Students use a menu, nutrition chart, and review to write a brief recommending one school lunch option to the principal.
