What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine information from several reliable sources to explain a topic and analyze how the ideas connect. They organize points logically, use varied transitions, and choose a tone that fits the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A strong response presents a clear controlling idea, groups evidence by meaningful points, and explains how each source supports the analysis. Transitions clarify relationships, and the tone stays consistent and appropriate.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize sources one at a time instead of combining them around shared ideas. They may stack quotations without analysis, repeat basic transitions, or shift between casual and formal language.

How to Assess It

Give students two short excerpts on school start times. Ask for one formal paragraph that combines both sources, uses two different transitions, and explains a conclusion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed claim and evidence strips, then have them sort the strips into an outline and label each planned transition.

  2. Ask which source best explains the issue and where the sources agree or differ, then have students defend answers with quoted details.

  3. Run a transition card challenge where pairs choose the best connector for each sentence pair and explain the relationship it signals.

  4. Students use two local news articles and a public data chart to write a city council briefing on a community issue.
