What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use drawing, letters, words, and early sentences to communicate an idea. They share their writing and explain what they want the reader to know.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses pictures, labels, letters, or simple sentences to share an understandable idea. The student can explain the message and add a detail when prompted.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think writing must be spelled perfectly or contain only conventional letters. They may also draw a picture without adding labels, letters, or words to share the message.

How to Assess It

Give students paper and ask, "Draw and write about something you like to do." Ask each student to read or explain the message.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards, then have them draw one card and add a label or sentence that tells about it.

  2. Show a simple drawing and ask, "What could the writer add so we understand the message?"

  3. Play Pass the Picture, where students add a label or word before passing the paper to a partner.

  4. Create signs for classroom areas, such as books, blocks, or art, using pictures and words to guide others.
