What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell a simple story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They use pictures, spoken words, labels, or sentences to show the order of events.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can show at least three connected events in a clear order. Their pictures, spoken words, labels, or sentences help a listener follow what happened.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may show unrelated events or place the ending before the beginning. They may draw one detailed scene without showing how events change over time.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-box exit ticket labeled first, next, and last. Ask them to draw or write about a time they helped someone, then retell it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three picture cards showing a simple event, then have them order the cards and turn them into a stapled booklet.
Ask, “What happened first, next, and last when you got ready for school?” Record student answers in three boxes.
Play Story Sequence Relay, where teams race to arrange mixed-up event cards and explain the order using first, next, and last.
Have students document making a snack by drawing each step, then tell the class what happened in order.
