What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write clear, organized texts for a specific purpose and audience. They develop ideas with relevant details, use an appropriate tone, and revise and edit their work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear main idea, organize related details, and choose words that fit the audience. They revise for meaning and structure, then edit sentence boundaries, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first draft as finished or focus only on spelling. They may include details that interest them but do not fit the purpose or audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students 10 minutes to write a paragraph convincing the principal to add one lunch option. Require a clear claim, two relevant reasons, and an appropriate tone.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a mixed set of sentence strips and have them arrange the sentences into a clear paragraph, explaining each placement.
Ask students to compare a text to a friend with an email to the principal, then explain how audience changes tone and detail.
Run a revision relay where teams improve vague sentences by adding precise verbs, relevant details, transitions, and varied sentence openings.
Have students write a real email requesting a school improvement, using a clear subject line, reasons, evidence, and respectful closing.
