What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students put ideas into pictures, labels, and simple sentences for a clear purpose. They organize related ideas, add details, and reread their work to improve it.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write one or more connected sentences that match their purpose. Their writing includes clear ideas, useful details, spaces between words, capitals, and end marks.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write unrelated words or rely only on a picture. They may leave out spaces, sentence endings, or details a reader needs.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a child finding a lost dog. Ask students to write two connected sentences that tell what happened and include one detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students arrange three picture cards in order, glue them down, and write one sentence under each card.

  2. Ask, “What makes a good classroom helper?” Students discuss one idea, then write an opinion sentence with a reason.

  3. Give pairs word cards to build complete sentences, then have them copy each sentence with capitals and punctuation.

  4. Students write a short note asking the librarian for a book and include a clear reason for their request.
