What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students put ideas into pictures, labels, and simple sentences for a clear purpose. They organize related ideas, add details, and reread their work to improve it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write one or more connected sentences that match their purpose. Their writing includes clear ideas, useful details, spaces between words, capitals, and end marks.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write unrelated words or rely only on a picture. They may leave out spaces, sentence endings, or details a reader needs.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child finding a lost dog. Ask students to write two connected sentences that tell what happened and include one detail.

Ask, “What makes a good classroom helper?” Students discuss one idea, then write an opinion sentence with a reason.
Give pairs word cards to build complete sentences, then have them copy each sentence with capitals and punctuation.
Students write a short note asking the librarian for a book and include a clear reason for their request.
