What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with others to gather facts about one topic. They use provided sources, choose details that answer a question, and record what they learn.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use a book, article, image, or other provided source to find relevant facts. They record information in their own words and explain how it answers the research question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy whole sentences instead of selecting useful facts. They may choose interesting details that do not answer the question or treat personal guesses as evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short animal fact sheet and ask, “How does this animal protect itself?” Have them write one fact that answers the question.

Ways to Teach It
Set up three source stations about one animal, then have pairs collect one fact from each source on sticky notes.
Ask, “Which fact best answers our question, and why?” Have students defend their choice using information from the source.
Play Fact Finder Bingo, with question cards students match to facts found in short books, captions, and classroom posters.
Research the week’s weather forecast, then have students use two facts to recommend clothing for an upcoming class activity.
