What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a simple question and use books, pictures, videos, or trusted websites to find an answer. They record useful facts and share what they learned.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks a clear question, finds information in a teacher-provided source, and records relevant facts. The student can share an answer using words or drawings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy every sentence instead of choosing facts that answer their question. They may treat guesses, opinions, or unrelated details as research findings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short page about frogs and ask, “What helps a frog live near water?” Have them write or draw one supported answer.

Ways to Teach It
Set out animal books and fact cards, then have students use sticky notes to mark two facts answering a chosen question.
Ask, “What do you wonder about our school garden?” Students write one research question and explain what source could help.
Play Fact Finder Bingo, where students scan simple texts to locate facts matching prompts such as habitat, food, size, or movement.
Use a local weather report to answer, “What should we wear tomorrow?” Students cite one forecast detail to support their choice.
