What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and produce content that combines words, images, audio, video, or interactive features for a clear audience and purpose. They choose a suitable platform, revise their work, check access settings, and distribute a finished version responsibly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can produce a polished digital text in which each media choice strengthens the message. The student can cite sources, add accessibility features, select a suitable format, and share a working version with the intended audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images or music that distract from the message rather than support it. They may think uploading a file counts as effective publishing. They also may overlook copyright, citations, captions, file compatibility, or sharing permissions.

How to Assess It

Give students a 150-word school announcement. In 20 minutes, they create and share a three-slide narrated presentation with cited visuals, captions, and correct access settings.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Storyboard and record a 60-second explainer that combines narration, original images, music, and captions, then export it as a video.

  2. Compare a podcast clip and infographic on the same issue, then write which format better serves each audience and why.

  3. Run a format-match relay where teams pair audience cards with podcast, video, slideshow, website, or infographic choices and defend each match.

  4. Create a digital safety campaign for younger students, publish it on the class site, and send the link to a school staff member.
