What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan, draft, and revise a digital text for a named audience and purpose. They add useful multimedia, format the piece, export it correctly, and publish it to a shared site.

What Mastery Looks Like

The writer uses a tone, structure, and level of detail that fit the intended readers. Images, audio, video, or links support the message and include needed captions or credits. The published file is polished, readable, and accessible at the shared location.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think changing for an audience only means changing vocabulary, while ignoring tone, details, and organization. They may add decorative media without captions, credits, or a clear link to the writing. Some confuse saving with exporting and fail to test links, permissions, or layout.

How to Assess It

Give students a 150-word school announcement for parents. Ask them to adapt it for students, add one credited visual, export it as a PDF, and submit a working link.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a draft, photo bank, and layout template, then have them publish a one-page digital event notice for ninth graders.

  2. Compare two versions of the same message and write which audience each version targets, citing three choices in tone, detail, or design.

  3. Play Audience Switch by drawing audience cards and revising the same paragraph for a principal, a student, or a community member.

  4. Create and publish a digital guide to a school service, using an interview quote, a helpful visual, and a tested link.
