What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask a focused question, locate useful sources, and judge each source for credibility, relevance, bias, and evidence. They combine information across sources, distinguish their ideas from source material, and document sources correctly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students develop a focused research question, use effective search terms, and select credible primary and secondary sources. They synthesize findings into a clear claim, address conflicting evidence, and cite sources accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first search result as reliable or confuse a polished website with a trustworthy source. They may copy facts without connecting ideas, checking bias, or citing the original source.

How to Assess It

Give students two short sources on the same claim. Ask them to choose the stronger source and justify the choice using author expertise, evidence, date, and bias.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place printed source cards around the room, then have teams rank them by credibility and label the evidence behind each ranking.

  2. Ask students to write one research question, then explain what evidence would answer it and which viewpoints should be included.

  3. Run a source credibility challenge where pairs score websites for author expertise, evidence, publication date, purpose, and possible bias.

  4. Have students investigate a local issue, compare reporting from three sources, and write a brief recommendation for a school or community leader.
