What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop a focused research question and use more than one reliable source to answer it. They gather relevant information, refine the question when needed, and credit their sources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form a focused question and adjust it as they learn more. They select credible sources, record relevant evidence, and cite each source correctly. Their findings clearly answer the question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust the first search result or assume a professional-looking site is reliable. They may choose evidence that is interesting but does not answer their question. Some copy source wording without quotation marks or citations.
How to Assess It
- Give students a research question and three short source excerpts. Ask them to choose the strongest source, explain why it is reliable, and cite one relevant detail.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed source cards, then have them sort the cards by reliability and label the evidence behind each choice.
Ask students to revise the broad question “How does social media affect teenagers?” into a focused, researchable question and explain their choices.
Run a source-check relay where teams identify the author, date, evidence, purpose, and possible bias of short webpages.
Students research one proposed school policy, such as later start times, then write a sourced recommendation for the principal.
