What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a focused question, search for relevant information, and judge whether sources are trustworthy. They organize evidence, combine ideas from several sources, and give credit through accurate citations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form a focused research question, find credible sources, and take useful notes. They combine information from several sources, cite it correctly, and explain how the evidence supports their conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first search result as reliable or choose sources that only confirm their view. They may copy quotations without context, omit citations, or list facts without connecting them to a clear claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about the same issue. Ask them to choose the stronger source, cite one useful detail, and explain their choice in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups four printed sources on one claim; students highlight evidence, label each source’s author and date, then rank reliability.
Ask students to write: Which source is strongest for this question, and what two details justify your choice?
Run a citation relay where teams match source cards to correct in-text citations and Works Cited entries.
Have students investigate a school policy question, survey classmates, check published sources, and present one evidence-based recommendation to the principal.
