The standard
Use the process of factoring and completing the square in a quadratic function to show zeros, extreme values, and symmetry of the graph, and interpret these in terms of a context.

What this standard means
Students need to rewrite quadratic functions into useful forms. Factored form helps them find zeros. Vertex form helps them find the maximum or minimum and the line of symmetry. They also need to explain what those features mean in a situation, not just name them.
Mastery looks like choosing a form on purpose, rewriting accurately, and connecting each number to a graph and a context. Students often mix up zeros and vertex, lose signs while factoring, or complete the square without keeping the function equivalent.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs quadratic cards in standard form and have them match each to its factored form, vertex form, graph, and key features.
- Ask students to write what the vertex and zeros mean for a ball thrown from a given height equation.
- Use an exit ticket with one quadratic and ask for zeros, vertex, axis of symmetry, and one sentence of interpretation.
- Bring in a simple profit model and have students find break-even points and maximum profit by rewriting the function.
