The standard
Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · High School — Algebra
What this standard means
Students need to see solving as a chain of logical moves, not just steps to copy. Each move should keep the same solution set, unless they explain why checking is needed. They should justify adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, factoring, taking roots, or rewriting expressions.
Mastery looks like a student saying why a step is allowed and spotting a false move in someone else’s work. Common trouble spots are dividing by a variable, losing solutions when squaring or taking roots, and using memorized procedures without checking whether both sides stayed equivalent.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: give pairs equation step cards and justification cards, then have them match, order, and defend the solution path.
- Discussion prompt: show a worked solution with one illegal move and ask, "Which line first changes the answer, and how do you know?"
- Quick assessment: ask students to solve one equation and write a reason beside each line, using words not just symbols.
- Real-world connection: use a phone plan equation and have students explain each algebra move as keeping the same break-even point.
