Math3rd GradeOperations and Algebraic Thinking

The standard

Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to make sense of equal groups, arrays, and sharing situations. They should choose multiplication or division, write an equation with an unknown, and explain what each number means in the story.

Mastery looks like matching a situation to a model, solving accurately, and checking the answer in context. Students often mix up groups and items in each group, or treat division as only “make smaller” instead of finding group size or number of groups.

Ways to teach it

  • Build arrays with counters for 4 by 6, 3 by 8, and 5 by 5, then write matching multiplication and division equations.
  • Ask students to write a story problem for 24 ÷ 6, then trade papers and solve a partner’s problem.
  • Show three word problems and have students hold up M or D cards to choose multiplication or division before solving.
  • Use snack packs, table groups, or sports teams to model equal groups and fair shares from familiar classroom situations.
