Math3rd GradeGeometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition.

The standard

Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.

What this standard means

Students need to connect area with counting equal square units, then see that rows and columns can be counted faster with multiplication. They should also break a larger rectangle into smaller rectangles, find each area, and add the parts to get the total area.

Mastery looks like drawing or using tiles to show why 4 rows of 6 squares is 24 square units, not just memorizing 4 × 6. Students often mix up area and perimeter, skip units, or add side lengths instead of multiplying rows by columns.

Ways to teach it

  • Give students color tiles and grid paper to build a 3 by 5 rectangle, then record the repeated addition and multiplication equation.
  • Ask students to explain in writing how two smaller rectangles can make one larger rectangle and how the areas are related.
  • Show a grid rectangle split into two parts, then ask students to find the total area and write both equations.
  • Have students plan a small rectangular garden on grid paper, split it into flower and vegetable sections, and find the total area.
