CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C
The standard
Work with time and money.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to tell and write time on analog and digital clocks, usually to the nearest five minutes. They also need to understand a.m. and p.m. as parts of a daily schedule. With money, they count coins and bills, write amounts using $ and ¢, and solve simple word problems.
Mastery looks like matching clock hands to digital times, explaining whether an event happens in the morning or evening, and choosing coins or bills to show an amount. Students often mix up the hour hand and minute hand, count nickels or quarters by ones, or forget which symbol goes with dollars and cents.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs plastic clocks and call out times like 7:25, then have students build the time and write it digitally.
- Ask students to write two sentences: one thing they do at 8:00 a.m. and one thing they do at 8:00 p.m.
- Show a clock face and a set of coins, then ask students to write the time and count the money on a sticky note.
- Set up a classroom store with price tags under $1, and have students choose coins to buy one item.
