Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to sort, name, draw, and build shapes by looking at their features. They should use words like sides, angles, faces, rows, columns, halves, thirds, and fourths. They also need to split rectangles, circles, and other shapes into equal parts and talk about the size of those parts.

Mastery looks like a student saying why a shape fits a group, not just naming it. They can draw a shape from clues and partition shapes into equal shares. Common trouble spots are counting corners instead of sides, thinking a turned shape is a new shape, and making unequal parts while calling them halves or fourths.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs pattern blocks and attribute cards, then have them build and sort shapes by sides, angles, or faces.
  • Ask students to write: How do you know a rectangle is still a rectangle when it is turned sideways?
  • Show three partitioned circles and ask students to mark which one shows equal fourths and explain why.
  • Use a classroom floor tile or brownie pan picture to discuss rows, columns, and equal shares.
