CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1a
The Standard
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to practice group talk habits. They listen when someone else is speaking, wait for a turn, stay on the topic, and use simple signals like raising a hand or passing a talking object. They also need to connect their words to the book, picture, question, or class topic.
Mastery looks like a child joining a short discussion without interrupting, looking at the speaker, and adding one clear idea when it is their turn. Many kindergarteners get stuck because they are excited, forget the topic, or answer before listening. Visual rules, short turns, and repeated practice help.
Ways to Teach It
- Use a stuffed animal as a talking object during a picture book share, and only the child holding it may speak.
- Ask, “What is one thing you heard a friend say about the story?” after partner talk.
- During circle time, mark a checklist for three behaviors: listened, waited, and spoke about the topic.
- Connect to playground games by naming how taking turns in talk is like waiting for a turn on the slide.
