CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.1b
The Standard
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to participate in group discussions by using the rules the class has agreed on, such as taking turns, listening without interrupting, staying on topic, and building on others' ideas. They also need to handle a specific role, such as facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, or evidence finder.
Mastery looks like a student doing their part without constant reminders. They speak at the right time, listen actively, and help the group move forward. Students often get stuck when a role feels vague, when one student dominates, or when discussion rules are posted but not practiced.
Ways to Teach It
- Give groups role cards for a short article discussion, then have each student complete the task listed on their card.
- Ask students to write one rule that helps discussions work, then explain what happens when that rule is ignored.
- Use a clipboard checklist during a five-minute group talk to mark who followed rules and completed their role.
- Connect roles to a team meeting by comparing facilitator, recorder, and timekeeper jobs to adults planning a school event.
