CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1a
The Standard
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to take part in class and partner talk without talking over others or drifting off topic. They should know the class discussion rules, use them without constant reminders, and show listening through eye contact, body position, and responses that connect to the text or topic.
Mastery looks like a child waiting for a turn, adding a related idea, and noticing when someone else has the floor. Common trouble spots are blurting, repeating an idea without listening, side conversations, and forgetting to connect comments back to the book or question.
Ways to Teach It
- Use a talking chip circle where each student spends one chip to share one idea about the read-aloud.
- Ask students to write or say, “One rule that helps our group talk better is ___ because ___.”
- During partner talk, use a checklist for waits turn, looks at speaker, and stays on topic.
- Connect to a classroom meeting about choosing a game for recess, with students practicing the same speaking and listening rules.
