ELA1st GradeComprehension and Collaboration

The Standard

Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to join a class or partner talk in a way that helps the group. They should look at the speaker, listen without interrupting, wait for a turn, and keep their comment connected to the book, picture, or topic.

Mastery looks like a first grader using simple talk rules with few reminders, even when excited. Students often get stuck interrupting, repeating an idea without listening, or sharing unrelated stories. They may know the rule, but need practice using it during real conversation.

Ways to Teach It

  • Use a talking stick during a picture book discussion, and let only the student holding it speak while others show listening bodies.
  • Ask, “What did your partner say about the story, and what can you add?” after a turn-and-talk.
  • During morning meeting, tally students who wait, listen, and speak on topic, then share one class goal.
  • Connect discussion rules to the playground by asking how taking turns in talk is like taking turns on the slide.
