What This Standard Means

Students need to read a story or poem aloud so listeners can follow and enjoy it. They should use a steady pace, clear words, expression, and pauses that match the meaning. They also need to decide when a picture, slide, prop, or drawing would help the audience notice a key detail.

Mastery sounds like a recording that is easy to understand without sounding rushed or robotic. The added visual supports the words, not distracts from them. Students often get stuck reading too fast, using a flat voice, mumbling endings, or choosing visuals that look nice but do not connect to the text.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students record a short poem on a tablet, then rerecord after marking pauses, louder words, and expression cues on the page.
  • Ask students to explain which one visual they would add to their recording and what detail it helps the listener understand.
  • Play a 20-second student recording and have classmates use a checklist for pace, clarity, expression, and helpful visual choice.
  • Show a short audiobook clip with cover art, then discuss how narrators and images help listeners follow the story.
