CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.7
The Standard
Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects 6—12
What This Standard Means
Students need to connect written explanations with visuals like graphs, tables, diagrams, models, or flowcharts. They should pull information from both places, match related details, and explain how the visual adds to or changes their understanding of the text.
Mastery looks like using the text and the visual together, not treating one as decoration. Students can point to evidence in both and explain the relationship clearly. Common trouble spots are reading axes, skipping labels, missing units, and copying facts from one source without combining them.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a short science article and matching graph, then have them annotate where each sentence connects to parts of the graph.
- Ask students to write: What does the diagram show that the paragraph explains less clearly, and what does the paragraph add?
- Show a table and a short technical paragraph, then ask students to write one claim supported by evidence from both.
- Use a weather forecast graph and written forecast, then have students decide what to wear and justify it using both sources.
