ELAGrades 9–10Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

The Standard

Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects 6—12

What This Standard Means

Students need to move information between formats. They read a science or technical passage and turn numbers, steps, variables, or relationships into a table, chart, diagram, or equation. They also explain what a graph, table, diagram, or formula means in clear words.

Mastery looks like accurate translation without losing meaning. Students choose a useful visual format, label it clearly, and explain trends, parts, or relationships with precise language. They often get stuck copying text instead of organizing it, missing units, misreading axes, or describing a graph without explaining what it shows.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a short lab procedure and have them convert the described measurements into a labeled data table with units.
  • Ask students to explain in three sentences what a provided graph shows, including the trend, units, and one specific data point.
  • Show a paragraph with numerical details and ask students to sketch the best chart type, then justify their choice in one sentence.
  • Use a nutrition label or phone data plan and have students translate the numbers into a short written explanation for a customer.
