Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to recognize common high-frequency words quickly, without sounding them out each time. Many of these words appear often in kindergarten books and classroom print. Some follow regular patterns, but others have tricky parts that need repeated practice.
Mastery looks like reading words such as the, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, and does in short texts with little pause. Students often confuse similar-looking words, rely only on first letters, or read the word correctly on a card but not in a sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Use word cards for a five-minute sort: words students know fast, words they almost know, and words to practice again.
- Ask students to choose two sight words and write a sentence for each, then read both sentences to a partner.
- Flash five taught words for two seconds each, then have students point to the matching word on a printed mat.
- Have students find today’s sight words on a lunch menu, morning message, or classroom sign and read the full phrase aloud.
