What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn and use precise words found across school subjects and within specific topics. They also select connectors that show how ideas relate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose words that fit the subject, meaning, and sentence. They connect ideas with language that clearly shows contrast, addition, cause, comparison, or another relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat connectors as interchangeable, using a contrast word when ideas actually add information. They may also choose impressive-sounding vocabulary without understanding its meaning or grammar.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write three sentences comparing recess and PE. Use however, moreover, benefit, and require correctly, then underline each target word.

Give pairs sentence strips with related ideas, then have them select and place connector cards that show each relationship.
Ask students to explain in writing how although changes the relationship between two ideas compared with moreover.
