What This Standard Means
Students need to learn new school words and subject words, then use them correctly in speaking and writing. They also need to understand signal words that show how ideas connect, such as contrast, addition, cause, and comparison.
Mastery looks like choosing the right word for the topic and using connectives to make thinking clear. Students often memorize definitions but misuse words in sentences. They may also treat all transition words as interchangeable, so their writing sounds confusing or the logic breaks down.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs sentence strips and transition cards, then have them place the best connector between ideas and explain the relationship.
- Ask students to revise a bland paragraph by adding three precise vocabulary words and two signal words that fit the logic.
- Use a four-question exit ticket where students choose the correct word, explain it, and write one original sentence.
- Have students label transition words in a science article and discuss how the words help the reader follow the explanation.
