ELA4th GradeVocabulary Acquisition and Use

The Standard

Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being (e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife, conservation, and endangered when discussing animal preservation).

What This Standard Means

Students need to learn and use grade-level words in speaking and writing, not just recognize them on a worksheet. They should choose precise verbs and feeling words, like “muttered” instead of “said,” and use topic words correctly when reading or writing about science, social studies, or literature.

Mastery looks like students using new words naturally and accurately in sentences, discussions, and short written responses. Common trouble spots are using a word that sounds right but means something different, overusing vague words, or memorizing definitions without knowing when the word fits.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort word cards into precise actions, emotions, states of being, and topic words, then write one sentence for each pile.
  • Ask students to revise a bland sentence by replacing vague words with precise verbs or domain words from the week’s reading.
  • Give a three-minute exit ticket with two target words and ask students to write one accurate sentence for each.
  • Connect vocabulary to a science article on endangered animals by having students explain conservation, habitat, and wildlife using examples.
