What This Standard Means
Students need to learn and use grade-level academic words and subject-area terms with accuracy. They should notice when a word matters for understanding a text or for saying an idea clearly, then use context, word parts, resources, and examples to build meaning.
Mastery looks like students choosing precise words in discussion and writing, not just recognizing them on a quiz. They can explain shades of meaning and use a new term correctly in a sentence tied to a text or topic. Students often get stuck using vague words, copying dictionary definitions, or mixing up related terms.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and highlighters to mark five words that carry meaning, then create student-friendly definitions and examples.
- Ask students to revise one vague sentence from their writing by replacing two weak words with precise academic or domain-specific terms.
- Use an exit ticket with three target words: define one, use one in a sentence, and explain why one matters in today’s text.
- Bring in a science or social studies paragraph and have students identify terms they would need to explain clearly to a younger student.
