What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice words that matter to understanding a text or expressing an idea. They determine meanings, record useful information, and use the words accurately in speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain important academic and subject-specific words in context. They choose precise words and use them correctly in discussion and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat context clues as proof instead of checking whether a meaning fits. They may copy the first dictionary definition or use advanced words in the wrong context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one important word from today’s text. Define it, name the clue or source used, and write an original sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs vocabulary cards to sort into everyday, academic, and subject-specific groups, then add a definition and example to each card.

  2. Ask students to explain which three words from a class text are most useful for understanding its main idea and why.

  3. Play Vocabulary Taboo, where students define a target word without using three listed related words, then use it in a sentence.

  4. Have students collect five specialized words from menus, sports reports, game instructions, or job postings and explain each word’s purpose.
