What This Standard Means

Students need to learn and use academic words and subject-specific terms with accuracy in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They also need to notice when an unknown word matters, then use context, word parts, reference tools, and examples to figure it out without waiting for the teacher.

Mastery shows up when students choose precise words in essays, discussions, and presentations, and can explain why a word fits. Students often get stuck using vague words, copying dictionary definitions, or knowing a word in isolation but not using it correctly in a sentence or argument.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and a four-column chart for word, context clue, meaning, and original sentence.
  • Ask students to revise one paragraph by replacing five vague words with precise academic or subject-specific words, then explain two choices.
  • Use an exit ticket with three target words: define one, use one correctly, and identify context clues for one.
  • Have students collect five workplace, college, or trade terms from a job posting and explain how each term affects the role.
