What Students Need to Do
Students figure out unfamiliar words using context, word parts, and reference tools. They use academic and subject-specific vocabulary accurately when reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
What Mastery Looks Like
A student can explain a new word in context, confirm its meaning with a reliable source, and use it correctly. They choose precise words that fit the subject, audience, and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
Students may choose the first dictionary definition, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may rely on one nearby word instead of checking several clues. Some recognize a term but misuse its form, meaning, or level of formality.
How to Assess It
Exit ticket: Read a short passage with one bold unfamiliar word. Write its likely meaning, name the clue or word part used, verify it in a reference, then use it in a new sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs word, definition, example, and nonexample cards to match, then have them explain each set aloud.
- Ask students to explain how one target word changes the precision or tone of a sentence.
- Play a Taboo round where students define target words without using three listed clue words.
- Have students collect unfamiliar words from a menu, job posting, or news article, verify meanings, and write useful examples.
