What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify body structures and behaviors that help an organism find food, avoid predators, or manage temperature. They connect each characteristic to conditions in a particular habitat.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an organism and its habitat, students classify a characteristic as physical or behavioral and explain how it improves survival. They can predict when that characteristic might become less useful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think organisms choose to develop helpful traits during their lifetime. They may call any behavior an adaptation or assume a helpful characteristic works in every habitat. They also confuse short-term acclimation with traits passed through generations.
How to Assess It
- Show a desert fox with large ears and nighttime activity. Ask students to identify one physical and one behavioral characteristic, then explain how each helps in the desert.

Ways to Teach It
Use tweezers, spoons, and clothespins as bird beaks to collect foods, then graph which tool works best in each habitat.
Ask students to explain why thick fur helps in tundra but can be a disadvantage in a hot desert.
Run a card sort matching organism characteristics, such as camouflage or migration, to habitat challenges and label each physical or behavioral.
Observe a local bird, insect, or plant and create a field note explaining how one characteristic fits the local ecosystem.
