What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe an organism's niche using its habitat, resources, activity patterns, and interactions. They explain how these features help its population survive. They predict what happens when niches overlap or resources change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a biological community, students can identify each organism's niche from evidence. They can compare two niches and explain how competition, resource use, or activity time affects survival.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often use habitat and niche as synonyms. They may describe a niche only as an organism's job, without naming resources, conditions, timing, or interactions. They may assume similar species use resources in identical ways.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A hawk hunts mice by day, and an owl hunts mice at night in the same field. Describe each niche and explain how timing supports survival.

Ways to Teach It
Set up trays with rice, beans, and rubber bands; students use different tools to test which food source each model species can use.
Write a claim explaining how two warbler species can share one tree by feeding in different zones, using niche evidence.
Play Niche Match: students pair organism cards with resource, activity-time, and interaction cards, then defend each completed profile.
Use photos of local pollinators to compare flower choice and feeding time, then predict how fewer native flowers would affect each population.
