What Students Need to Do

Students observe an object or event, then ask a question about what they notice. They identify a need or problem and make a prediction using their observations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point out a specific detail, ask a related question, and name a problem that needs solving. The student can predict what may happen next and explain the observation behind the prediction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give a statement instead of asking a question. They may make a random guess rather than use an observation, or name something they want instead of a problem to solve.

How to Assess It

Show students a paper cup with a small hole and water dripping. Ask each student to state one question, name the problem, and predict what will happen next.

   Give pairs ice cubes in trays, then have them observe, ask one question, and predict what will happen after five minutes.

   Show a wilted plant and ask, "What do you notice, what does it need, and what will happen if we water it?"

   Have students sort picture cards into observation, question, problem, or prediction groups, then explain one choice.

   Inspect the classroom for a need, such as pencils rolling off desks, then sketch a fix and predict how it will help.
