What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students describe air as matter that has mass, takes up space, and exerts pressure. They identify temperature, pressure, density, and volume as measurable properties of the atmosphere.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use observations or measurements to describe atmospheric properties. They can explain how a syringe, balloon, or barometer provides evidence that air takes up space and exerts pressure.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think air is weightless, empty space, or only present when wind blows. They may confuse air pressure with wind speed or think pressure acts only downward.

How to Assess It

Give students a capped syringe diagram and ask: What happens when the plunger is pushed, and what does this show about air? Require the terms volume and pressure.
