What Students Need to Do

Students explain that air contains several gases mixed together. They identify gases such as nitrogen and oxygen as elements, and carbon dioxide and water vapor as compounds.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a particle diagram of air, students identify the sample as a mixture and classify its gases as elements or compounds. They explain that the gases keep their own properties.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think air is only oxygen, or that it is a single compound. They may also think any two-atom molecule, including N₂ or O₂, is a compound.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name two gaseous elements and two gaseous compounds found in air, then explain why air is a mixture.
