What Students Need to Do: Students identify major seafloor features, including the continental shelf, slope, abyssal plain, ridge, seamount, and trench. They use models and maps to describe changes in depth and shape.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label a seafloor cross section and describe where each feature is found. They explain that the seafloor has mountains, plains, and deep valleys much like land.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the seafloor is flat or that continents end at the shoreline. They may confuse raised ridges and seamounts with deep trenches.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled seafloor cross section. Ask them to label four features and write one sentence comparing the seafloor with land.
