What Students Need to Do: Students identify traits and actions that help plants and animals survive. They sort examples as physical adaptations, such as thick fur, or behavioral adaptations, such as migration.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify an adaptation as physical or behavioral. They explain how it helps an organism find food, avoid danger, handle weather, or reproduce.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every body part a physical adaptation or every action a behavioral adaptation. They may confuse learned tricks, temporary changes, and human choices with adaptations shared by a kind of organism.
How to Assess It: Give students three examples: webbed feet, hibernation, and a dog sitting on command. Ask them to classify each and explain their choices.

Lesson moves

Give pairs animal cards to sort under Physical, Behavioral, or Not an Adaptation, then require one survival explanation for each choice.
Ask students to explain whether a bear's thick fur and winter denning solve the same problem in different ways.
Play adaptation charades using actions like migration and hibernation, then match each action with a physical adaptation card.
Study a local squirrel and list one body feature and one behavior that help it live near homes, trees, and roads.
