What Students Need to Do: Students identify and order the stages a plant passes through, from seed to adult plant and new seeds. They describe how the cycle begins again.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students place pictures of plant stages in order and explain each change. They recognize that mature plants produce seeds that can grow into new plants.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a seed is not alive or that every seed becomes a plant. They may also place flowers before leaves or treat growth as a straight line rather than a repeating cycle.
How to Assess It: Give students five plant stage pictures to order. Ask them to write one sentence explaining how the last stage connects to the first.

Lesson moves

Plant bean seeds in clear cups, then draw and label changes every two days.
Ask students to explain what would happen if a flowering plant never made seeds.
Play a relay where teams arrange seed, sprout, young plant, flower, and seed pod cards in order.
Cut open an apple or pepper, find the seeds, and trace how those seeds could produce more fruit.
