What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify and arrange the stages in plant and animal growth. They use pictures, observations, or models to explain how one stage leads to the next.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given mixed picture cards, students correctly sequence the growth stages of a familiar plant and animal. They explain one similarity and one difference between the two sequences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think young animals always look like smaller adults or that all animals hatch from eggs. They may think seeds are not living or that growth stops at adulthood. Some arrange stages as a straight line and miss how offspring begin the sequence again.

How to Assess It

Give students four mixed pictures of a bean plant and four of a frog. Ask them to number each set in order and circle where a new cycle begins.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs bean plant and butterfly stage cards to sequence, then have them connect the stages with yarn and arrows.

  2. Ask students to write how a bean plant's growth is like a butterfly's growth and how it is different.

  3. Play Life Cycle Relay, with teams racing to arrange mixed frog and sunflower cards and explain one placement.

  4. Cut open an apple, find the seeds, and draw how one seed could eventually produce another apple.
