What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what information will answer a simple question. They collect that information by counting objects, asking classmates, or drawing one picture for each response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question such as "Which color appears most in our button box?" students say they need color counts. They count each object or response once and keep an accurate record.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect facts that do not match the question, such as counting all buttons when color counts are needed. They may skip items, count an item twice, or use one picture to represent several responses.
How to Assess It
- Ask, "Do more students in your group choose cats or dogs?" Have each student name the needed data, ask group members, and draw one picture per choice.

Ways to Teach It
Ask which cube color appears most, then have students sort mixed cubes, count each group, and draw one mark per cube.
Ask, "How could we find our class's favorite recess activity?" and have partners explain who to ask and what to record.
Play Question Match by pairing question cards with useful data cards, such as shoe type counts, lunch choices, or pet choices.
Plan a class snack order by surveying classmates about apple or banana choices, then drawing one picture for each vote.
