What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what information will answer a simple question. They collect that information by counting objects, drawing one picture per response, or making tally marks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question such as “Which fruit does our class prefer?”, a student names the responses to record. The student gathers each response once and keeps an accurate count.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect information that does not match the question. They may skip responses, count one response twice, or draw pictures without using one picture per response.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show six pet cards labeled dog, cat, dog, fish, cat, and dog. Students state what to record and make an accurate tally table.

Students spin a color spinner ten times, tally each result, then trade records with a partner to check the counts.
Survey classmates about how they travel to school, then record each response with a picture or tally mark.
