What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what information will answer a question, including who to ask and what responses to record. They collect responses with votes, lists, tables, charts, or tally marks.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the exact data needed and choose an appropriate group to ask. The student records every response once in an organized list, table, chart, or tally.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect interesting information that does not answer the posed question, or ask people who cannot provide useful data. They may count one response twice, skip responses, or group tally marks incorrectly.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: We want to know which of three recess games second graders prefer. Write who you would ask, what you would record, and how you would collect it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students sticky notes to vote for a class read-aloud, then record each vote in a tally table.

  2. Students write which data they need to find the class’s preferred playground game and explain how they would collect it.

  3. Play Survey Match: students match question cards to data cards and collection tools, then explain each match to a partner.

  4. Have students survey lunch choices, tally responses, and tell the cafeteria manager which option received the most votes.
