What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the numeral immediately earlier in the counting sequence from 0 to 20. They answer from known number order rather than recounting from 1.

What Mastery Looks Like

When shown 14, the student quickly says 13 and explains that it is one less. The student answers accurately for mixed numerals, including 1, 10, and 20.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give the next number instead of the previous number. Some restart counting at 1 for every answer. They may forget that 0 comes before 1 or confuse teen numerals.

How to Assess It

Show six shuffled numeral cards: 1, 5, 10, 11, 16, and 20. Ask, "What number comes right before each one?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a 0 to 20 floor line with numeral cards; students stand on a called number, then point to the card just before it.

  2. Ask, "How do you know what comes before 12 without starting at 1?" Have students explain or draw their thinking.

  3. Play Before Bingo: call a numeral from 1 to 20, and students cover the numeral immediately before it on their boards.

  4. Use a classroom calendar and ask which date comes just before selected dates from 2 to 20.
