What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students begin with a number they are given and continue the counting sequence by ones. They count accurately across decade changes and up to 100.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 37, the student says 37, 38, 39, 40, and continues in order. The student can cross decade changes and reach 100 without restarting at 1.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students restart at 1 instead of continuing from the given number. Others skip or repeat numbers, especially at transitions such as 29 to 30 or 79 to 80.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student, “Start at 58 and stop at 66. Then start at 94 and stop at 100.”

Ways to Teach It
Place a token on 47 on a hundred chart, then have students move one square and say each number through 57.
Ask students to write the next five numbers after 68, then explain how they knew what came after 69.
Draw a starting number card, then pass a beanbag as each child says the next number until the class reaches 100.
Open a book to page 42 and have students read each page number aloud while turning pages through page 52.
