What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say number names in order, beginning with zero and ending with one hundred. They keep the sequence going through transitions such as 19 to 20.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student says each number name in order from zero through one hundred. The student moves through each new decade without prompts, skipped numbers, or repeated numbers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip numbers, repeat numbers, or confuse the order of teen numbers. They often pause or restart at transitions such as 19 to 20 and 99 to 100.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to count aloud from zero to one hundred. Record any skipped, repeated, or reversed numbers and note pauses at decade changes.

Ways to Teach It
Build a train of 100 linking cubes, touching each cube while the class counts aloud together.
Ask, "What number comes after 19, 29, and 39? What pattern do you notice?"
Play a counting circle game where each student says the next number, continuing until the class reaches 100.
Count 100 classroom supplies, such as craft sticks or napkins, aloud before placing them into a storage bin.
