What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students begin with any named number within the range and say each next number in order. They keep the sequence accurate across decade changes and continue through 120.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can begin at a number such as 37 and continue in the correct order without restarting at 1. The student moves smoothly across decade changes and stops at 120.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may restart at 1 instead of beginning with the given number. They may skip or repeat numbers, especially when moving from 39 to 40 or 109 to 110.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to start at 98 and count aloud through 120. Note any skipped, repeated, or reversed numbers.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student a 120 chart, counter, and start-number card; students move one square and say each number through 120.
Ask why 59 comes before 60, then have students explain the pattern and name other places where the tens digit changes.
Play Count Around: name a starting number, then students take turns saying the next number until the class reaches 120.
Label pretend elevator floors 0 to 120; start at a chosen floor and count each floor as the elevator rises.
